Trimble NetRS This rugged, high-accuracy GPS unit is designed for long term deployment in both laboratory and field conditions. When left to run at a single location for months at a time, the unit can track up to 12 satellites simultaneously thereby obtaining an accuracy of less than a centimeter. The NetRS can be accessed using an ethernet connection that allows it be controlled either directly or over the internet. The units will be used to continuously monitor glacial and tectonic movement, as well as to act as base stations for other GPS measurements.
Trimble Pathfinder This survey-grade handheld GPS unit is perfect for mapping objects and locations while working in the field. The GPS can map objects to within roughly three meters (10 ft) while moving. The unit is composed of three components: an antenna for communication with satellites, a receiver interface to record data, and a battery pack to power the system. The Pathfinder has been used to map the terminus of the Mendenhall Glacier and record a variety of sampling locations.
Brick Bricks, the brain child of Dr. Rob Fatland, are small Linux computers that are designed to act as communication management hubs for field data. The units have a built in GPS unit, which allows their position to be tracked over time. This makes the bricks particularly useful for monitoring glacial movement.
