VIRTUAL TOUR OF LEMON CREEK WATERSHED

Lemon Creek, located in Southeast Alaska, USA, is a small, glacial watershed that hosts a diversity of temperate ecosystems. At the head of the watershed, 1200 m above sea level, lies the 15 km2 Lemon Glacier. The Lemon Glacier covers approximately 20% of the watershed with a layer of ice up to a few hundred meters thick. As one moves from the mountain peaks surrounding the glacier down toward the marine environment, you pass through a range of complex and diverse ecosystems. The ecosystems include sparsely vegetated alpine tundra, lush alpine meadows, new and old-growth temperate rainforests, cold streams, and, at the lowest reach, tidally-influenced wetlands.

This site is intended to allow users to explore various facets of the ecosystems found in the Lemon Creek watershed. For each of the ecosystems, issues related to the hydrology, plants, and animals have been discussed. Users can explore the watershed using either the traditional webpage layout, or by using a geospatial layout in which all of the information has been referenced to particular areas within the watershed. The geospatial exploration supports both online mapping and Google Earth capabilities.
